I Poo in blue
oh jeez, I thought this was SO funny when I first saw it!
I just HAD to share it with you all
I'm sorry
It seems that I have bothered or possibly offended a couple people who i care about with the details of my post about my first doctor's appointment. I could be way off base here because no one has actually come to me directly, but through the grapevine it appears that a couple people are at least bothered. So I just wanted to apologize. I'm sorry, if you're one of those people, please know that it was never my intention to disturb or upset you.
Please allow me to give an explanation of where my head's at on this.
I probably should have put a bit of a disclaimer, if you will, on my first blog post to avoid any possible misunderstandings. Initially in creating my blog I had the intention of using this as an outlet for myself, for my own personal emotional and physical experiences during and possibly after my first pregnancy. I didn't honestly think anyone would be interested in what i had to say, and didn't necessarily intend to use that as a deciding fact for what i decided to say (i am pleased to find that you are reading this, it makes me feel a lot better then i thought it would! It makes me feel like you all are interested in my thoughts). I've always been better at getting my thoughts and feelings out on paper and saw it as a great opportunity for myself because of the ridiculous range of emotions I know I'm going to go through during this next year. Especially with Troy's deployment occurring in the next few months. It's going to have a huge impact on me and a huge impact on this pregnancy. I will be looking for support. I've never been pregnant before and there's a lot I don't know. After a discussion with some friends of mine, I decided it'd be nice to see another woman talk about pregnancy in detail in a "girl talk" way instead of text book generalities. I have found, even this far, that what helps me the most is hearing stories of other women's experiences.
I thought this would give me the opportunity to share some of the things I'll learn through describing my experiences as well as gain information through feedback of other's personal experiences. Nothing I have said or will say is going to be anything that's not considered normal practice or procedure by doctors (unless of course something unthinkable happens, in that case i may or may not talk about it) If you've been keeping up with my blog thus far, the area of concern is in my description of a vaginal ultrasound, pap smear, and breast exam. All these procedures and exams are considered normal and are described in every pregnancy book I've read or scanned through so far as well as being thought of as normal female education, meaning most females are aware of these and the procedures involved and have even experienced them. However, I was not aware until my first appointment and figured if I didn't know, there's other girls/women who also don't know. In an attempt to be both considerate and professional i used only a text book descriptions and labelling for these procedures. My only intent on sharing this information was to put the education out there about natural/normal procedures that are put in place simply to protect us and our babies. I just wanted to share what i learned.
Again I apologize if I did bother or upset anyone. Please understand that it is my intent to be both correct and professional in any further descriptions of doctor procedures or exams. I mean no disrespect to anyone and will not use slang words or derogitory verbage, but I do feel it's something that should be shared. I also feel that God gave us this beautiful privilage of carrying and delievering new babies into the world and he also privilaged us with the knowledge and science to perform many extensive exams to protect ourselves and our new babies. As one woman to another, I honestly feel that it is our responsibility to be unashamed of these things and to share them with eachother. We're only helping ourselves and our loved ones by being educated.
I hope this clears up any confusion and gives you a better idea of the angle I will be taking with my blog.

It's a waiting game
OK, my jeans are getting a little tighter, I'm feeling a little more bloated, but still not showing. I still look like all the other regular girls who aren't with baby.
I've had the opportunity to spend a little more time around some of the Marine's wives, half of which are obviously pregnant, and i must admit (I'll probably kick myself for saying this once I'm actually in their shoes) I'm a little jealous. I'm ready to really feel like this is real. It still hasn't quite hit me yet. I think it's because I've really had hardly any symptoms and I'm not showing. The biggest, most difficult symptom I've had to overcome is feeling tired all the time. I swear I can easily sleep for twelve hours a night if I let myself (and i have a couple times) Luckily I have had only minor nausea, which seems to directly correlate to being hungry. If I'm not hungry, I'm not nauseous.
I already feel like I'm in a never ending waiting game, and laughing at myself because further down the road I think I'll completely contradict myself and be wishing it was over or wishing i was back to the beginning again.
It's still really early, only about 10 weeks along, I think there's a lot of women who may have just found out they're pregnant at this point.
I guess it's probably a normal feeling to have... anyone else remember feeling this way?

Super powers
I have officially developed my very own super power. It's not even one of those awesome super powers like being able fly. I now have super human sent!
This is just weird! I can smell things that other people don't even know exist. I could probably smell something a mile away...
The other day i was taking a shower, once i was finished i walked out into the living room. There Troy was just sitting on the couch watching TV. All of a sudden this horrendous smell hits my nose! It was SO nasty! It was SO bad i could not even tell what it was! Some kind of gross mix of old peanut butter and dirt. It was like someone had just cooked some really nasty food... The culprit: Troy. So with a look of disgust I ask him, "what in the world did you just eat!!" He appeared to be a little freaked out by my dramatic response and in an attempt to save himself he replies with, ".... uh, nothing..??? why??"
"Because it stinks in here! It smells so disgusting! What did you make!??"
".... I just had some celery with peanut butter on it :-/ "
"wow!! how much did you have! I can smell that through the whole place!"
"uh... like a stick or two"
Can you believe that!?? I was shocked. I ate the exact same thing not two days earlier and it was delicious and didn't smell bad at all. I was so surprised by how bad it smelled and how strong it smelled. I mean c'mon, normally I would not even be able to smell something like that! But it was as if someone was holding it right under my nose. It was so weird!
Poor Troy, must have been thinking he had done something wrong. I rarely react to the smell of anything, so this probably came as quite a freaky surprise to him!
Not necessarily the best super power to have developed. It seems like most things just smell really bad!
Oh! But there is one thing that I'm so loving the smell of. This is something I've always thought smelled pretty good but mostly because it makes me think of family BBQs and summer time, the actual smell itself is not all that fabulous, but now.... oh its a whole different story! The smell of someone grilling. Grilling anything, it doesn't matter. It smells so fantastic! I smell it all the time since it's nice here families are always grilling for dinner. It's so wonderful I'm almost of the verge of walking over to them and just standing there, "Don't mind me, I just want to smell your dinner!"

First Ultrasound
I had my first OBGYN appointment and ultrasound yesterday, Tuesday, June 22, 2010.

Troy and I find it humorous that the doctor is able to tell anything from this. To us it just looks like a blob in there, no features of any kind to speak of. I can't wait 'til it starts to really look like a baby!
After this we were sent back over to suite 200B to meet the "real" Doctor. Here they took my blood pressure (125/70 that means nothing to me but she said it was really good), weighed me and gave an extensive questionnaire. The nurse asked me about a million questions about my health history, my family health history, and Troy's family health history. She asked about any symptoms I've been having... which actually all that's happened so far is nausea in the morning and every time I get hungry. I haven't been sick at all, and as long as I eat something, most of the time my nausea goes away almost immediately. Other then that, I've been extremely fatigued and the easiest physical tasks make me feel so tired out! Oh, and I'm hungry every couple hours.
After this we were finally able to meet our doctor. She was so cute! She was extremely and obviously excited about meeting us and getting to help us with our first baby. She made me feel like I was the only person she knew having a baby. It was really sweet :-) She gave us a lot of information, very quickly. It was a bit of an info overload, thank goodness she gave us lots of pamphlets and print outs that re-state all the info she gave us. She asked us when we got married and if we were trying to have the baby and talked to us about what to do since Troy will be deploying part way through the pregnancy she even said she wanted to know when he was leaving because she likes to pray for all her military dads. That was very nice and made us feel good to know.
During our conversing she wanted to do a pap smear and a breast exam. This is something that I should have had done a long long time ago, I'd been putting it off and putting it off and embarrassingly I must admit I'd never had a pap smear before. I tend to be very comfortable when doctors have to do weird, sometimes embarrassing things like that. I have it in my head that it's their job, they're suppose to do it, its to help me and in this case to help our baby. If you've had a pap smear before this is all old news and no big deal, but to those that haven't ... it does feel slightly uncomfortable. It was kinda funny because she's doing this while talking to me about this and that, like it's just no big deal

Once we did a little more talking, got a little more info we were free to leave to go get blood tests done. This part was great because there was a little misunderstanding between me and the doctor. I thought she had told me to get dressed and wait in the room, but she had thought she told me that I could leave to go to suite 200C again for the screening. So Troy and I were in the room for a good extra five minutes or so, when he finally had to use the bathroom, so we decided to head out and try to find one. Our nurse was out there and was like, "oh you guys ARE still in there!" so I explained to her what we thought and we all laughed because she thought we were just taking extra time talking about something or taking a long time to get dressed. Finally we headed for 200C to do the blood screening. This is so they can check for all kinds of things like protein levels and hormone levels which if abnormal could mean chromosome abnormalities. They also will use it for an HIV test. This was freaky for me because it really makes me nauseous thinking about them taking blood out of my body with that needle stuck in my arm. It's pretty freaky. So of course i didn't look while she was doing it. Troy, the macho man that he is, watched the whole thing but was kinda surprised by how much they actually took. If i remember right, they'll have to take my blood at many, if not all of my up coming appointments. They said if they don't call me, everythingsfine. So as my mom said, "no news is good news." Hopefully they won't call!

After that was a quick urine sample, then going to the front desk to schedule the next appointment for 4 weeks from now. At this next appointment they'll do some more screening and we should be able to hear the baby's heart beat! I'm very excited about that! I think at that point the ultrasound will show a little more then a blob, it might start looking like a baby to the untrained eye.
It is going to be really weird, from now up until i think it was about 28weeks ill have to go to the Doctor once a month, after that every two weeks, then even more often once it's closer to being born. It's weird that i'll be spending so much time at the Doctor's office. I never go to the Doctor's unless it's some sort of an emergency.
This is all just SO cool!
This was very cool and very weird for me all at the same time.
Troy was actually able to come with me and see our baby for the first time and meet the doctor and all that...
Not cool because if you've never had a baby before, you don't really know what to expect at this first appointment, let me tell you it was long!
Here's how it really went down...
We get there to suite 200B, where they told me to go when i scheduled my appointment, but apparently this was the wrong place because they wanted to do my ultrasound first so they sent us down the hall to suite 200C. Once we were there, almost immediately they were ready for us in the room with the ultrasound machine. Because it's still so early they had to do a Vaginal Ultrasound luckily i had been doing some reading and was expecting this, or it would have been a bit of an awkward surprise. Basically the doctor/nurse has the patient lay on a table with her feet up in stirrups and inserts a probe covered with a condom and gel into the patient's vagina. The probe sends out soundwaves that basically bounce off of the baby and reflect a picture on to a TV screen which allows us to see what the baby looks like.
On the screen in front of me we could see the typical ultrasound picture that we're already used to seeing. It was really crazy though because that's OUR baby in this picture! To the untrained eye it just looked like a blob up there on the screen. According to the doctor our little baby was quite a wiggle worm (which is a good thing) so she was having trouble getting the view she needed to get to see whatever she needed to see. To Troy and I the blob looked the same no matter how the Dr moved it around. Finally she says "let me try something else here..." and moves the probe around a little and then stops. I guess she finally got the angle she needed because she froze the screen for a second then explained to us that toward the end on the left is the tip of the head and the end on the right is the tip of the spine. ... Still looked like the same blob to us. She even showed us the heart beat. Very faintly we were able to see a little spot moving up and down, just like a heart beat. It was very cool!! The baby was a lot bigger then i was expecting it to be. It was awesome! It made it feel so real.

I always thought it'd be kind of cool to start my own blog but never really had anything to write about. Nothing I thought anyone would be interested in reading anyway.

Today I found out that our suspicions are confirmed facts! Troy and I have been married for a year in August, and have not been trying but at the same time we have not NOT been trying, if you catch my drift. Well, along came the date I was suppose to start my period, and there it went… about a week later I went to our family doctor to find out that I am positively pregnant! How exciting for us, our first baby. At this point I’m only about 5 weeks along, too early to get an ultrasound or see an OBGYN. I have already scheduled my OB appointment for 06/22 at which point I’ll be about 9 weeks along. I already can’t wait!! This whole thing has barely started and I’m so excited I don’t even know what to do with myself. It’s so surreal; it really has not quite hit me yet.
Troy had to be at work today of course, He’s currently taking a course at Orange Coast College, offered through the Marine Corp. It’s a residential electrician course. I surprised him by meeting him at his lunch time. I never visit him for lunch. I called him from down the street and said “hey I’m down the road, want to have lunch with me!?” of course he was totally surprised and loved the idea. So I went over to the school and we had lunch together. I made him close his eyes, telling him I had a present for him but didn’t have time to wrap it. He closed his eyes and placed the present in his hands, when he opened his eyes he saw before him a book entitled "so you’re going to be a dad”. He got it right away, looked up and smiled at me with the most excited smile I think I’ve ever seen! It was exactly what he’d been hoping for. He was so happy!
I’m already feeling pretty fatigued at times. Other than that, no symptoms yet!
I just can’t wait for what’s to come!

This week I’m visiting mom and dad and the rest of the family in Vancouver. I’ve been going crazy wanting to tell them I’m pregnant but have been struggling with if I should tell everyone at the same time, or tell my immediate family then tell everyone else later in the week. Well after asking some advice from troy and just thinking about what I really know about my parents, especially dad I decided to tell them first, then pass the news along later when I see everyone else.
I had lunch with Jamie earlier in the day and just couldn’t hold it in any longer, I just had to tell her! We had been talking about this and that for a few minutes, when there was a pause I just said to her “so… I just found out that Troy’s going to be a dad!” She just looked at me for a second like….”huh?” then it finally dawned on her…”what!!?? You’re pregnant!!!??” It was hilarious! We chatted a little about how I told Troy and how I found out and all that and determined that it’s just so crazy and surreal! Like, holy cow! We’ve been friends since we were little girls in the 9th grade and now I’m married and having a baby!! Wow, we really are grownups now.
Later in the day I decided it’s time to tell mom, dad, Emily, Ben, and Daniel. Daniel had been working late at work, and was having a hard time getting over to Mom and Dad’s house. So I decided to tell them all now, and go to Daniel’s place later to break the news to him.
We’re all sitting on the couch watching TV. I went upstairs to get a little gift for mom and dad. At this point, it’s totally irrational because I’m married and grown up and out on my own, but I was so so so nervous to tell them! I was so worried about what they’d say, how they’d feel, at times I was even worried that they’d be upset with me. Well duh Laura! You’re not a high school kid with doing this with some boyfriend. This is okay, it’s really great, they’ll be really happy!...Wrapped in baby blue and baby pink, two squares about 8x10 size. I handed the blue one to dad and the pink one to mom, “I got you guys a little something, you have to open them together, and they kind of go together…” They both thought it was a probably a painting I’d done for them, especially since Dad had just been asking me for a painting a few minutes earlier. Mom says, “what’s with the blue and pink?” Quick on the spot I had to come up with a clever excuse that wouldn’t give it away just yet, “well since they go together, blue for dad, pink for you so I’d know which was which.” Mom replies, “oh okay!” wow…. That was too easy! :-P
They open their presents and start to read “…Grandmother, Grandfather…remembers…??” and both look at me, then look at each other, then back at me, “WHAT!!! YOU’RE PREGNANT!!!!” One for dad and one for mom, books that they can fill out about themselves to give to their grandchild. Grandmother remembers…. And Grandfather remembers…. Little bits and pieces of their lives that they can share, paired with photos, with the new grandbaby. They were so thrilled! Emily and Ben were sitting right there too with the same reaction “WHAT! SERIOUSLY!!!???” from then on the questions poured in ….”When did you find out, were you guys trying, how far along are you…” so we all chatted for a little then called Troy. Troy was back here in Cali because he couldn’t get the days off to come to Vancouver with me. Mom and Dad talked to Troy a little, congratulated him and what not. Troy was so thrilled and so was everyone else. It went so so well.
Not ten minutes later dad was already on the phone calling his mom and sisters to tell them the great news. At that point it was time to go tell Daniel and his girlfriend Beth. I took Emmy and Ben with me over to Daniel’s. We told him and Beth. Their reaction expectedly was not quite so extreme. But they were thrilled and very happy for us, Daniel says “well now it makes sense why you texted me a million times to come over to mom and dad’s” I was so happy it all worked out and everyone was so happy.
What a fabulous feeling and a huge weight off my shoulders!
Today me, Mom, Dad and Emily decided to head to the waterfront on the Vancouver side for a little walk and dinner at Mcmenamins. We thought it'd be fun to invite Bill and Theresa out with us. Theresa was able to make it to dinner, which was great! Perfect chance to share the exciting new news with her!
It was so nice out, great day for a quick walk. Mcmenamins was extremely busy, we ended up waiting for a good 45 minutes for a table out on the patio.
Lucky for Theresa, she showed up right as we were able to be seated. We chatted with her and ordered our dinner... all the while trying to figure out when to break the news to her. My mom she's so clever, she takes out her camera pretending to take pictures of whatever, and suddenly starts aiming the camera at Theresa, who of course is so not interested in having pictures taken of her...she's like, "what are you doing?" .... oh! the perfect time to tell her!
Boy did mom get the perfect series of pictures... they are an exact sequence of Theresa's reaction to this news... These completely speak for themselves

On Sunday I told everyone else and Linda was the one who freaked the most. She screamed and laughed and smiled. Unfortunately we couldn't get a great picture of it, but she was as excited as my own parents and Theresa. It was so great to know everyone was so happy! :-)
